According to the figures in the last Demography and Health Survey (ENDS 2010) in the country, 19.5% of adolescents have been pregnant at least once. In other words one in five of teenagers between 15 and 19 years old is a mother or was pregnant: In Barranquilla out of every 100 pregnant women, 19 are teenagers between the ages of 10 and 19 years old.
An early pregnancy generates health risks for the mother and for the baby; this leads to desertion and discrimination in educational, family and social contexts; early association to the labor market, greater probabilities of being a part of sub-employment chains and other unstable forms of labor relationships, also to family and emotional stressors and the reconfiguration or acceleration of life projects.

Childhood malnutrition is the main cause of school desertion, thus resulting in the increase of risk factors for minors, such as: drug addiction, prostitution, alcoholism, teenage pregnancies and greater participation in street gangs.
